Where to Apply for a Patent Application?
Patent application can be made in 3 different ways according to the protection system:
- National Patent Application (Turkish Patent and Trademark Office in Turkey)
- European Patent Office (EPO)
- Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
National Patent Application
It is applicable only in the country where the application is made.
The application shall be granted a priority right (priority right of application) for making an international patent application within 12 months as of the date of filing.
European Patent Office (EPO)
The registration made by the European Patent Office is equivalent to a national patent application.
The applicant chooses countries where he or she has requested protection.
Cost depends on country where the application is made.
Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT)
It is a starting point for applications in the countries that are parties to WIPO.
It includes multiple national entry and examination stages following the international application phase.
A PCT application can be made through the European Patent Office (EPO), the WIPO World Intellectual Property Office and the National Office.
